Obama orders federal workplaces improve safety

Posted on July 30th, 2010 No Comments

Last week, President Obama signed an order to have all federal workplaces improve their safety standards by reducing injuries and illnesses incurred in the workplace in the next four years.

By 2014, Obama hopes all government agencies will improve their safety standards to cut the number of employee injuries, cut the time spent reviewing a claim, and speed up an injured or ill employee’s return to the workplace.

In 2009, 79,000 new claims were filed by federal employees and $1.6 billion were spent by the government on workers’ compensation.

“Many of these work-related injuries and illnesses are preventable, and executive departments and agencies can and should do even more to improve workplace safety and health, reduce the financial burden of injury on taxpayers, and relieve unnecessary suffering by workers and their families,” stated the President.

Will leaving a job cost an employee workers' compensation benefits?

Posted on November 5th, 2009 No Comments

Employees sometimes leave their job while still receiving employers' compensation benefits. When this occurs, these employees could lose a portion or all of their workers' compensation benefits.

Employees usually face this circumstance when they have sustained an injury, but their doctor has given them permission to return to work. In many cases, the employee will only be able to perform limited duties.

Because of the injury, the employee may choose to leave the job. In this case, the insurance provider may stop making lost wage payments.

If you believe you have stopped receiving workers' compensation payments unfairly, contact Your Iowa workers' compensation lawyers of LaMarca & Landry, P.C., at 877-327-2600.

Appeals court overturns workers' comp case

Posted on August 4th, 2009 3 Comments

The Iowa Court of Appeals overturned a district court ruling that originally held the city of Ames liable for paying for the treatment of a city employee's injury.

The original case was between Jerry Tillman, a 25-year-old employee at the city's power plant, and the city of Ames. Tillman was injured Dec. 17, 2005 when he slipped on ice while at work. The city initially declined to pay for the treatment. But the state review board and district court held the city liable.

With the court of appeals overturning the district court's decision, the case will be resubmitted to district court for retrial under the new guidelines.
