Fatal crashes down for Iowa

Posted on August 23rd, 2010 No Comments

Last year, the number of auto accident related fatalities was the lowest it has been in Iowa since World War II times. This year’s numbers are shaping up to be even lower.

As of this week, there have been 191 fatalities related to traffic crashes on Iowa roads. In 2009, there had been 227 by this time, with the number increasing to 372 by the end of the year. These numbers amount to a 16% decrease in fatalities from 2009 to 2010.

When asked how this decrease is possible when the police are dealing with budget cuts, Iowa State Patrol trooper Paul Rairden responded:

“I think technology has helped a great deal. They locate problems areas. In general I think all departments, city state and county all do that. They locate their areas where they’re having problems, fatalities, bad accidents, speed complaints, whatever and then we can concentrate on those areas.”

The state also has a 93% compliance rate when it comes to buckling up and is also the second lowest state in the nation in terms of alcohol related fatalities.

Reckless driver in Ankeny crash has lengthy record

Posted on May 13th, 2010 No Comments

Court records show that the driver responsible for the reckless driving crash last Thursday that killed two children and left their mother and another child in critical condition had previously been charged more than a dozen times for traffic-related incidents.

Previous charges include speeding, reckless driving, failure to maintain control, and leaving the scene of an injury accident.

The 46-year-old Norwalk man was driving his pickup truck in Ankeny when he failed to stop for a stop sign at Southeast Tone’s Drive and Southeast Creekview Drive, according to police.

He collided with a minivan driven by a mother with her three children, aged 5 months, 3 years, and 5 years old.

All four were seriously injured. The 5-year-old and 5-month-old both died while in hospital care.

The 46-year-old man was not seriously injured.

Iowa teen driving safety close to lowest in nation

Posted on May 7th, 2010 No Comments

Iowa has been ranked 49th out of 50 states and the District of Columbia by a U.S. News & World Report article on national teen driving safety.

The article used eleven variables to create its ranking. These included car accident fatality, driver’s license, and road-quality statistics collected by the federal government as well as ratings of road safety laws and driving from two independent organizations.

“A lot of the criteria has to do with graduated driving licensing,” said a spokeswoman for the Iowa Department of Transportation, Dena M. Gray-Fisher.

A graduated driver’s license law was passed in 1999 in Iowa, which was one of the first states to institute a GDL law. It requires supervision and training of young drivers, with restrictions on when and wit h whom young drivers may drive lifted as they become more skilled.

Teens and young drivers in Iowa are involved in over 40 percent of accidents while only comprising 17 percent of the population.

Gov. Chet Culver signed into law a bill April 28 that makes it required for those under the age of 17 in the back seat to wear a seat belt, and on July 1, a ban on teenage cell phone use while driving will go into effect.

Some teen drivers are responsible and mature. Many others are not, either due to technological distractions (phones), bad decisions (drinking and driving), or a physiological inclination to incorrectly assess threats. Iowa man killed in speeding accident

According to Crawford County police, at 11 p.m. Friday a car crashed into a tree on 520 Avenue, about 200 feet west of 250th street in rural Crawford County.

The 23-year-old Mount Pleasant driver and his three passengers were heading eastbound on 520 Avenue in the man’s 2001 Chevrolet Camaro when he lost control of the vehicle where the road surface transitioned from pavement to gravel. Police say that the man was driving at a high rate of speed and that this likely contributed to the car accident.

The driver suffered head trauma when the car struck a tree, and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel. His passengers were taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center as well as Via Christi for treatment for suspected head injuries.
