A teen driver was injured by a train Wednesday morning in rural Winneshiek County.

According to officials with the Iowa State Patrol, the train-truck collision occurred shortly after 7:00 a.m. on 29th Avenue north of Iowa Highway 24. Police say 17 year-old Jordan Blaess, of Spillville, did not see the westbound train in time to stop his Chevrolet pickup truck. According to the accident report, the force of the impact caused the truck to roll before it came to rest in a ditch.

Blaess was transported by ambulance to the Winneshiek Medical Center in Deocrah. His injuries were described as non-life-threatening. No information on the nature of his injuries was available.

The train is owned by Canadian Pacific Railway, authorities said..

The accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.

Fatal Accident Not First For Truck Driver

73-year-old John Bahl was driving his semi when his trailer detached from his vehicle. The trailer hit the vehicle of 55-year-old Mark Kerper. He was killed, but his passenger remained unharmed.

KCRG reports this was not Bahl’s first accident. “In September 2003, Bahl was driving a flatbed trailer when a backhoe slid off the trailer on Highway 52 east of Rickardsville in Dubuque County,” reports KCRG. His backhoe, in eerily similar circumstances, hit a vehicle, killing the driver and seriously injuring the passenger.

Bahl was punished for the first accident for violating safety requirements and paid a $400 fine. He was charged with violating safety violations again in 2007, paying another fine. No charges have been filed yet in this accident.
