Iowa State Police report that a 47-year-old woman was killed Saturday night when the pickup she was a passenger in left the road and flipped over into a rain filled ditch about six miles southeast of Mount Pleasant.
Another passenger, a 64-year-old man, is in critical condition.
Police have not released the identity of the truck’s driver, but it is believed that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
The Woodbury County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday opened an investigation into ways to slow motorists traveling on Stone Avenue in Sioux City, Iowa. After a nearby road was paved, traffic picked up in the area, and there have already been several crashes in which drivers have plowed into local residents’ homes.
County engineers report that a stretch of Stone Avenue is poorly designed, with a sharp corner and somewhat obscured speed limit sign. The Iowa Department of Transportation has already attempted to reduce accident numbers in the area by lowering the speed limit of the road near the corner from 55 mph to 35 mph, with limited success.
Board chairman George Boykin of Sioux City promises to improve safety along the road by adding new guardrails and new fluorescent, clear signs.
