Spiderwebs Prompt Mazda Recall

Posted on March 10th, 2011 No Comments

A spider that likes the smell of gasoline has prompted Mazda Motor Corp. to issue a recall of more than 52,000 vehicles.

According to the National Highway Safety Commission, the Yellow Sac spider is attracted to the smell of gasoline and makes its home in the vent lines of certain Mazda vehicles. The Mazda6 has two pipes coming out from its gas tank, instead of one, which means the smell of gasoline is strong enough to draw the spider in, but not strong enough to kill it.

The NHSC has received more than 20 reports of spider web build up in Mazda6 vent lines. A build up of spiderwebs could cause the emissions control system to increase pressure in the fuel tank, causing cracks, which lead to fuel leaks.

Mazda dealers will inspect the vehicle’s vent lines and install a spring to prevent spiders from entering the emissions system.

Ford Recalls F-150s Over Airbag Defect

Posted on February 23rd, 2011 No Comments

Ford Motor Co. said Wednesday it will recall more than 144,000 F-150 pickup trucks for potential airbag problems.

The recall includes 2005 and 2006 model year pickup trucks sold in the U.S. and Canada. The automaker issued the recall after receiving reports from consumers of airbags inadvertently deploying. The airbag defect was traced to vehicles build during the first shift at the company’s now-closed Norfolk Assembly Plant.

Ford spokesman Wes Sherwood said, in a statement, that an improperly installed wire in the steering wheel can cause a short circuit to occur, illuminating the airbag maintenance lamp. If the vehicle is not serviced, the airbag could deploy, even if the vehicle has not experienced any impact.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration asked Ford to recall 1.3 million trucks including 2004 models. Federal safety regulators are reviewing the automaker’s recall plan to determine whether it is adequate.

An ambulance driver was sentenced Monday for a fatal crash in Beaver last year.

According to Carroll County circuit court documents, a judge handed paramedic Robert Genzen, of Manning, a 10-day jail sentence for an ambulance crash that killed a fellow paramedic and a patient. The accident occurred last May on U.S. Highway 30. Genzen was driving the ambulance at the time and collided with a tractor-trailer. Genzen and another paramedic were injured in the accident.

Prosecutors say Genzen was driving the ambulance at 90 miles per hour before rear-ending the truck. “He should have been slowing down much sooner. There was no visual obstructions or anything like that,” Assistant Boone County Attorney Daniel Gonnerman said. Genzen struck the semi as he attempted to pass the vehicle on the right.

Plea Hearing Scheduled for Driver in “Fallen Four” Crash

Posted on January 20th, 2011 No Comments

A plea hearing is scheduled next month for the Iowa driver who’s accused of killing four motorcyclists last August.

Investigators say 22 year-old Andrew Schlichtemeier was four-and-a-half times the legal limit when his pickup truck swerved into oncoming traffic and crashed into the four motorcyclists returning from Strugis. The accident occurred August 9th on Interstate 29 near Little Sioux, Iowa.

Schlichtemeier, a UNL student, was scheduled to have a suppression hearing Wednesday. His attorney had asked that his blood alcohol level and statements made to investigators not be allowed in a trail. That hearing has been canceled and a plea hearing has been scheduled for February 10th instead.

Schlichtemeier has pleaded not guilty to four counts of vehicular homicide. The motorcyclists, commonly referred to as the “fallen four,” were 62 year-old Dennis Chaney, 49 year-old Dale Aspedon, 62 year-old Steven Benscoter, and 48 year-old Jay Bock.
