According to court documents, a Champaign County judge awarded 56 year-old Carla Link $11 million in a personal injury lawsuit filed in 2004. The lawsuit says Link and her teenage daughter were in a van on Interstate 74 near Mahomet on Labor Day 2004 that was struck by a pickup truck pulling a trailer with horses inside. The truck was driven by 31 year-old Clovis Crane who fell asleep while driving. Crane was not injured in the accident.

The $11 million judgment was ordered Wednesday by Judge Jeff Ford. Link’s attorney, John Loeschen, however, says the judgment is only a win on paper.

“[Crane] is a professional horse breeder, trainer, rodeo rider. There’s not a lot of money that flows through his hands,” Loeschen said. “With a judgment this size, our understanding is he will probably proceed into bankruptcy.”

According to officials with the Davenport Police Department, the accident occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. Thursday on Rockingham Road near Kimmel Drive. Police say 45 year-old Buffalo-resident Jeffrey Buchanan was traveling west on Rockingham Road on a 2010 harley Davidson motorcycle when he lost control of the vehicle, went onto the shoulder of the road, and crashed.

Buchanen was transported by ground ambulance to an area hospital for treatment. He was later flown by MedForce helicopter to Iowa City for treatment of his injuries. No information on the nature or extent of his injuries was available.

A spokesman for the Davenport Police Department said speed is believed to have contributed to the auto accident.

According to officials with the Grand County Sheriff’s Department, the accident occurred shortly before 7:00 p.m. on Highway 20, just west of Dike. Police say 24 year-old Marquette-resident Chad Laurich was driving a pickup truck that went off the roadway and struck a guardrail. The truck then went airborne, struck an embankment and landed in a creek.

According to officials with the Fort Dodge Fire Department, workers were beginning to remove part of the deck on the U.S. Highway 169 bridge early Monday when the deck collapsed and fell about 20 feet. The workers were employed by Minnowa Construction Inc., of Harmony, Minnesota.

According to Fort Dodge Fire Chief David Luers, a worker suffered a cut on his forehead and a wrist injury. The worker was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. No information on the extent of his injuries was available.

According to officials with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, 25 year-old John Crivaro, of Des Moines, was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident on Iowa Highway 5 near Hartford. Deputies say Crivaro was traveling the wrong way in the southbound lane of Iowa Highway 5 and collided with a tractor-trailer shortly before 5:00 a.m. Tuesday.

A motorcycle also collided with Crivaro’s vehicle. The motorcyclist was transported by ambulance to a Des Moines hospital for treatment. No information on the nature or extent of his injuries was available.

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured in the accident.

According to officials with the Bremer County Sheriff’s Department, 30 year-old Natasha Barkhausen was transported to Waverly Health Center after being rescued from her vehicle. Deputies say the accident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 3 and Hilton Road.

According to the Iowa State Patrol accident report, Barkhausen was driving a Dodge Neon eastbound on Highway three when she slowed to turn onto Hilton and was struck from behind by a pickup truck driven by 71 year-old Charles Sliter.

Sliter was not injured in the accident.

The crash remains under investigation.

According to officials with the Iowa State Patrol, the accident occurred shortly after 9:00 a.m. at the intersection of Interstate 680 and Interstate 29 in Council Bluffs. Police say 68 year-old Edgar Leu was attempting to exit onto I-29 when he lost control of his vehicle. Leu’s vehicle slid across the exit ramp to the roadside ditch, where it rolled several times, police say.

According to officials with the Des Moines Police Department, a school bus collided with a sedan shortly after 10:00 a.m. on East 6th Street near Interstate 235. Police say the school bus was from the Stratford district.
According to the crash report, a white sedan drove into the path of the school bus as it headed west on 6th Street. No citations have been issued in connection with the accident.

Police say two dozen elementary school students were onboard the bus at the time of the accident. None of the children were seriously injured, but three rescue crews were called to the scene of the crash to treat minor injuries.

The accident remains under investigation by the Des Moines Police Department.

According to officials with the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred shortly after 5:20 p.m. on Harding Avenue, about one and a half miles north of Rock Rapids. Police say 31 year-old Benjamin J. Perry was traveling north on Harding Avenue when he lost control of his 1999 GMC Suburban for unknown reasons. The vehicle rolled several times before coming to rest on its roof.

Perry was ejected from the vehicle in the crash. He was transported by ambulance to Sanford Medical Center in Rock Rapids for treatment. He was later flown by helicopter to Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, where is listed in serious condition.

According to a statement from the automaker, the company is recalling certain 2011 Jetta models to fix a potential problem with the wiring of its horn and anti-theft system. Volkswagen says a fuse that protects the car’s anti-theft alarm and the converter box that operates the windshield wipers and headlights could malfunction. Under certain circumstances, a short circuit in the horn can cause the headlights and windshield wipers to stop working, which would increase the risk of a car accident.

The recall affects 2011 model-year Jettas build between March 2010 and March 2011.

The company will notify owners of the defective vehicles by first class mail with information about corrective measures. Volkswagen dealer service technicians will reinstall the vehicles’ wiring so the convertor box and horn do not share the same fuse.

The company says no injuries or accidents have been reported as a result of the flaw.
