Thanksgiving Holiday Travelers Reminded to Travel Safely by Iowa Officials

|

The Iowa Department of Public Safety encouraged people traveling to, from, and within Iowa to practice safe driving habits over the holidays. In particular, they should be especially careful when maneuvering their vehicles and use seat belts and other safety devices to lessen the risk of serious damage in the case of unpreventable vehicular accidents.

A report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed 341 people from the United States lost their lives in vehicle-related traffic accidents in 2014 during the Thanksgiving holiday. A spokesman from the Department of Public Safety said most of the people who died – 50% of them, in fact – were not wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau Chief said police officers will focus their efforts on dangerous motor activity on the streets during those times. He noted, “what officers are looking for are violations that could cause serious injuries.”
