Kitchen Safety Tips

People tend to feel safer in their homes, perhaps because it is familiar territory. Unfortunately, this feeling is not rooted in fact; most serious accidents occur in the home. Fortunately, by taking extra care and keeping important safety tips in mind, you can avoid many accidents or at least minimize their effects. This article will look at one of the more dangerous rooms in a home: the kitchen.

If you have been hurt by negligent behavior or a defective product in the kitchen, you could be eligible for compensation from the party responsible. To learn more, call the Des Moines personal injury lawyers of LaMarca Law Group, P.C. at (515) 705-0233.

Basic Kitchen Safety

Whether you are cooking for a large crowd or just for yourself, you can keep yourself safe in the kitchen by following a few simple steps:

  • When cooking with raw meat, always use different utensils to cook and prepare it, to avoid spreading dangerous bacteria. Never store raw and cooked meat in the same container, and always be sure to keep raw meat at the correct temperature (40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower).
  • Never store aerosol containers over the stove, as they can overheat and explode. In fact, any potentially dangerous chemical should be stored at ground level; otherwise, it may leak onto your cooking supplies.
  • Never leave food unattended on the stove or in the oven. If a fire does break out, use baking soda to put it out. Never use water or flour on a kitchen fire.
  • Keep children out of the kitchen while you are cooking. If you want to invite a child in for a cooking lesson, try to limit your visitors to one at a time. If you have pots or pans on the stove, keep their handles turned inward to make them harder for a small child to grab or nudge.
  • Keep your knives sharpened. A dull knife is more likely to slip and cause injury. When using a knife, always be sure to keep the blade pointed away from your fingers.

If you have been hurt by someone’s negligence in the kitchen, whether in a private home or a large industrial kitchen, our Des Moines personal injury lawyers can help.
