Volvo has been fined $1.5 million by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration after it failed to report an impending recall in a timely manner. Federal law requires automakers to tell the NHTSA about safety defects that warrant a recall within five business days.
The Swedish car manufacturer has agreed to pay the fine in order to avoid litigation. In a public announcement, Volvo apologized for the delays and declared its dedication to quality and consumer safety.
In 2010-2012, Volvo issued seven different recall campaigns. Defects such as incorrect tire-pressure labeling, stalling engines, and defective airbag deployments affected more than 32,000 vehicles.
